Villa Antiope

Description

Welcome to Villa Antiope!

This is one of the best preserved Roman villas in Andalucia, located by the Mediterranean sea. Villa Antiope emerge several centuries later to be admired in all of its brilliance.

This journey through time will allow the visitor to dive into the history of our ancestors through the architectural remains, the ceramics and other personal properties, as well as high value mosaics.

An intense restoration work has allowed this 3rd century AD Roman villa to show up. Here, the different rooms that formed it may be seen, from the private ones to the large reception and recreation halls

Villa Antiope is one of the best examples of how a heritage asset must be integrated in contemporary constructions. Antiopa was the Theban princess that was seduced by Satyr, Zeus dressed as a satyr, from which the villa receives its name.

The visit to the villa, located in the town of Torre de Benagalbón, will allow you to discover the presence of a series of mosaics in each of the interior rooms as well as the exterior porch. Along with these decorative elements, we may also get to know the auxiliary spaces that were used to provide service to the residential complex and the different storages or bathrooms, as well as the main economic source of the villa: the garum and salting products. This settlement was declared as a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC) by Andalucía’s government in 2008.

The most spectacular and unique Mosaic is the one that can be found in room number 1.

There we may find two figures created in opus vermiculatum which represent two mythological Greek characters: SATYR and ANTIOPE.

These characters are nude and representing an erotic scene through a dance. The male character is located at the left of the scene with a radiated crown. The woman is seen from behind, with a tambourine over her right shoulder from which different ribbons appear.

A short skirt, which has been striped out of her, may be seen over her legs.

Villa Antiope is one of the best preserved sea villas in Andalucía, and it is one of the best examples of how a heritage asset could be integrated in a contemporary construction.

Visiting Villa Antiope is a unique, sensitive and special experience to know in detail the evolution of the site, how these large Roman villae worked, their architecture, decoration, items, functionality and their economic and social activity.

A unique experience where you could see, hear, touch, taste and smell history, through the combination of traditional museographic resources with the most advanced technology.
