The Rincón de la Victoria Victorian Anchovy Festival, declared a Provincial Tourist Singularity, is reinvented in its 17th edition with a new format adapted to the current health situation. Thus, although the traditional popular festival on the beach will not be held, the activities will extend throughout the week, from 22nd to 27th September, and will be held in three different safe spaces, as well as around thirty restaurants, almost double the number of last year’s edition- with showcooking and tasting sessions sponsored by the promotional brand of the Provincial Council, Sabor a Málaga, which also organises a market of agri-food products in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento from the 25th to 27th of September.

This edition is full of new features due to the current circumstances, where there will be no popular festival although the activity will last until the weekend. Like a travelling programme that will take place in three different spaces, in order to energise the municipality’s  catering industry. These spaces are Lacaliza, in Rincón de la Victoria, Añoreta Golf, in Torre de Benagalbón, and Hotel Moon Dreams Calabahía, in La Cala del Moral. On the other hand, the festival will be hold in around thirty restaurants in the three districts of the municipality (Rincón de la Victoria, Benagalbón and Cala del Moral) and the city of Malaga. And from the 25th to the 27th of September in the restaurants of the municipality of the anchovy network there will celebrated free tasting of fried and pickled anchovies when ordering a drink.

Showcooking

The programme will begin on the 22nd of September with the showcooking El Boquerón Tropical, by Eurotoques chefs Raúl González and Sergio Garrido. On the 23rd it will be the turn of El Boquerón Viajero, with the participation of Artcua chefs José Muñoz and Sergio Cortés. These activities will be held in Lacaliza.

On the 24th, the cooking space will be Añoreta Golf, with the participation of the chefs from Amuco Estefanía Marchal and Lucía García, who will star in the show cooking El Boquerón con toques de ayer y hoy. It will also be at Añoreta Golf, on the 25th, where the chef Enrique Sánchez (host of tv-show Cómetelo in Canal Sur) will star in the showcooking Un Boquerón con Historia.

On Saturday the party will move to the Hotel Calabahía and with the showcooking De Rincón, el Boquerón. José López, from Añoreta Golf, and Daniel Jesús Cuadrado, from Lacaliza, will be in charge of this activity.

The programme closes with Daniel García Peinado, the AOVE chef, on the 27th with the Boquerón y AOVE showcooking, in which the chef will explain the secrets of frying with extra virgin olive oil.

To attend these activities it will be necessary to register in advance from September the 15th  through the mail turismo@turismoenrincon.es of our own website www.turismoenrincon.es. In addition, those who cannot attend will be able to enjoy all the activities by streaming from the Youtube channel of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall.

This year all the dishes will be paired with some of the best Malaga wines awarded for Sabor a Malaga and for the first time there will be harmonies with extra virgin olive oil. The pairings will be made by Jesús María Claros, expert in Malaga wines, and the by Francisco Lorenzo, expert in aoves oils.

Taste of Malaga Market

In parallel with the Victorian Boqueron Festival, the Malaga Provincial Council is organising a Sabor a Málaga Market to be held between Friday the 25th and Sunday the 27th of September in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The market will have 14 stands offering a wide selection of representative products from the province.

In addition, there will be side activities such as tastings, workshops and showcookings to highlight the municipality’s cuisine and restaurants. To this end, there will be chefs collaborating, such as Álvaro Saura, from the Liceo Playa restaurant, who will prepare a Victorian anchovy burger, and Rafael Serrano, from the Marina Playa beach bar, winner of the second prize in the 6th Torremolinos Costa del Sol Espeto Competition, who will reveal live the secrets to making the best skewed seafood.

The Mercado Sabor a Málaga will be open to the public from 10.00 to 22.00 on Friday and Saturday, and from 10.00 to 15.00 on Sunday.

Anchovy Network

The Victorian Anchovy Restaurant Network has been set up with the participation of 29 restaurants in Rincón de la Victoria and Malaga city, and will be active from the 14th to 27th Sof eptember to support the promotion of the festival and encourage the consumption of anchovies. It is worth noting the great variety of dishes and the creativity of the chefs in this regard.

Another novelty in this year’s edition is the transfer of the popular weekend festival to the local restaurants. On the 25th, 26th and 27th of September, the Rincón de la Victoria restaurants participating in the network will offer their customers free tasting of fried and pickled anchovies when they order a drink.

Likewise, the event has all the necessary safety protocols and measures endorsed by an independent external consultant so that the activities are carried out with all the health guarantees in each space.
