About Benalgabón

Just 5 kilometres away from the Mediterranean, this little urban centre still holds the most unique essence of Málaga’s Axarquía.
To walk the paving roads of Benagalbón is like going back in time. This little urban centre is the most unique of the four that form the municipality of Rincón de la Victoria. The most valuable historical and cultural legacy of the area may be seen on its whitewashed houses, as well as its steep alleys.
Although it is the least populated urban centre of Rincón, Benagalbón makes up for its size thanks to its extraordinary cultural richness. Its origins go all the way back to the 11th century, when it was possibly founded by a Berber tribe during the North African invasions. Their name gave identity to the town and the municipality that would be created centuries later.
Patrimonial Treasures

The Popular Arts Museum is its most precious jewel. This museum is located in a traditional famer house and it is divided into two different areas: one which focuses on the traditional home and another one which focuses on their farming equipment and tools. The most outstanding thing about this location is that almost every piece displayed on this museum has been donated by locals, keeping the collective memory of entire generations alive. It is currently closed to the public due to renovation work.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Church of Our Lady of Candelaria) is another indispensable attraction. This temple, which was built in the 16th century, is the oldest in the entire municipality and features some extraordinary internal murals painted by the artist Francisco Hernández. If you visit the church, they will make you feel history in first person.
For those passionate about its culinary tradition, the traditional olive mill of Benagalbón offers you the chance to see the cold-pressed virgin olive oil elaboration process first-hand. This product is an emblem of the local culinary tradition, so much so that is being named as “liquid gold”. Produced following the traditional methods, this olive oil is considered one of the more exclusive gourmet products of the region.
Blending Tradition and Nature

Centro de Estudios del Folclore Malagueño (Málaga’s Folklore Study Centre) is another point you must visit while in Benagalbón. This is a location which has turned into a role model for the preservation and promotion of the traditional music of the province. Among them we may find the legendary singing of verdiales, considered to be one of the oldest fandangos in Andalusia.
If you are passionate about nature, the different mountain routes starting from Benagalbón offer clearly signalized paths which allow you to enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast and Axarquía’s mountains. Routes such as the ‘Arroyo Granadillas’ or the ‘Cerro Benagalbón’ are ideal for both experienced hikers as well as families searching for an enjoyable day outdoors.
Fairs and Festivals

Benagalbón’s festive calendar is another great attraction. The festivities in honour of Candelaria, which are held every February 2nd and they bring lots of activities to town, such as processions, street parties and culinary events which attract visitors from all of the region.
The Cultural Week offers a wide range of activities for people of all ages, such as the Verdiales Music Traditional Contest. This competition has been declared as a Málaga’s Unique Festival and more than 12 groups of ‘montes’ style gather to fill its streets with the sounds of this ancient art.
The charm of Benagalbón is located on its authenticity and a timeless lifestyle. Walking on its streets, having a conversation with locals o simply sitting on a terrace to see the sunset are awesome experiences which connect the visitor with the most genuine essence in Málaga’s Axarquía.
